There was a recent study in Mainz, Germany, that looked at how common and why people use nutritional supplements (NS) when they go to fitness classes. The study focused on new multi-ingredient supplements like pre-workout boosters (PWBs). Some PWBs, like enhancers like DMAA( geranium plants), N,α-DEPEA, DMAE, and DMBA, may have risks, harms, and benefits that we don’t fully understand yet. Out of the 492 people polled in 13 fitness studios, 57.0% said they had used NS in the last four weeks.

The study shows that using pre-workout boosters (PWBs) is linked to several things, such as gender, training regularity, and the reason for wanting to improve sports performance. This powder, which might contain stimulants like DMAA, is connected to predictor variables like wanting to improve mental focus ability and competing. It is important to remember that these substances are not meant to be eaten. This adds to the ongoing debates in the exercise community about what these supplements might mean for people, as this may lead to adverse events. 

DMAA and Memory Studies

In another study, a dietary supplement containing caffeine and DMAA showed some interesting effects on the central nervous system, particularly in memory and mental speed when taken 30 minutes before testing. These findings shed light on the potential of DMAA to contribute to weight management without compromising cardiovascular safety.

Previous studies on 1,3-dimethylamylamine have shown that it causes a short-term rise in blood pressure, mostly at the systolic level.  A study with 25 people over 10 weeks found that a supplement with 1,3-dimethylamylamine did not significantly raise their steady heart rate or blood pressure. The supplement only slightly raised systolic blood pressure by about 6 mmHg. Notably, health factors in the blood, such as creatinine and alkaline phosphatase, changed over time, but there were no big differences between the supplement group and the placebo group. A big change in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels showed that the supplement group had a drop of about 7 mg · dL(-1). Please keep in mind that this compound should not be consumed. More research is needed with a longer intervention period, a bigger sample size, and more health and safety measures.
