Liothyronine, or T3, is a research medication designed to treat underperforming thyroid (hypothyroidism). The science behind this is that liothyronine sodium supplements or replaces the hormone usually produced by the thyroid gland. As a research drug, liothyronine sodium is not advisable for human consumption.
Liothyronine is a synthetic hormone for the human thyroid, and it may come in liquid form. Low thyroid hormone levels can occur naturally or as a result of the thyroid gland being injured by radiation/medication or surgically removed. Having an adequate supply of thyroid hormones aids in one’s overall health.
Certain medications involving thyroid hormone dosage, such as liothyronine sodium, are influenced by the indication and must always be customized based on patient response and reliable laboratory findings.
Liothyronine can be utilized to treat hypothyroidism, which is a condition of an underactive thyroid that does not produce enough thyroid hormone. It works by supplementing the thyroid hormones that the body usually produces. Once its research is completed, liothyronine should belong to a class of medications known as thyroid agents.
Aside from this, this potential drug can be used to treat goiters (enlargements of the thyroid gland) and to screen for hyperthyroidism (a condition where the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone).
Liothyronine sodium could produce allergic reactions, but researchers of the medicine are aiming to make this a rare case. There is currently insufficient evidence from clinical studies to support the use of liothyronine as the first-line therapy for hypothyroidism alone or in combination with other medications.
Because liothyronine sodium is still an experimental thyroid agent for an underactive thyroid, it can cause specific side effects. For this reason, it is not recommended for human consumption. Below are some perceived side effects of liothyronine sodium based on current pharmacy tests:
Below is a list of research participants who were not included in clinical tests due to possible adverse effects from taking liothyronine sodium:
Aside from treating patients with low thyroid levels, liothyronine sodium medications may also be applied to other types of treatments. Here is a short list of them:
According to this report [R], tri-iodothyronine (T3) is thought to play a key role in the thyroid hormones’ most important actions. As a result, researchers believe that liothyronine, a synthetic form of T3, may induce repair and limit neurodegeneration in people with multiple sclerosis.
Antidepressant augmentation with T3 is one of the oldest evidence-based treatments for major depression. Prange et al. published a seminal study [R] in 1969 demonstrating that liothyronine administration improved response to tricyclic antidepressants in patients with treatment-resistant depressive disorder.
According to this review [R], liothyronine addition can be a safe and effective treatment for unipolar depression with appropriate baseline and follow-up safety monitoring. However, larger, longer-term studies may be required to compare liothyronine efficacy with serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors and multimodal antidepressants.
According to this research [R], liothyronine may cause weight loss. This synthetic hormone, however, should not be used as a weight loss medication. Using liothyronine for weight loss in subjects who do not have thyroid dysfunction may result in undesirable side effects.
This study [R] concluded that liothyronine treatment (LT3) improved the quality of life in women on levothyroxine (LT4) monotherapy or LT4/LT3 combination therapy with residual hypothyroid symptoms. Short-term LT3 treatment did not result in biochemical or clinical hyperthyroidism, and there were no cardiovascular side effects. More research is needed to determine the long-term safety and efficacy of LT3 monotherapy.
Participants of clinic tests for LT3 are advised to follow the doctor-prescribed dosage to determine the efficacy of the treatment. This is done to ensure research subjects can avoid under and overdosage of the treatment.
The participant is to take the medication as soon as possible but skip the missed dose if the next dose is approaching.
Headache, sweating, diarrhea, irregular menstrual periods, confusion, weakness, swelling in your hands or feet, increased heart rate, chest pain, shortness of breath, fainting, restlessness, or irritability are all symptoms of an overdose.
Subjects who suspect of experiencing overdose were given immediate medical attention.
